After 10 years as a physical therapist, we’ve learned some valuable lessons about pain, movement, and staying healthy. Here are the top 7 things you need to know…
1️⃣ Pain ≠ Harm: Pain is your body’s way of signaling potential issues, but it doesn’t always match the extent of damage. Think of a paper cut—hurts like hell, but the damage is minimal.
2️⃣ Long-Term Habits Matter: Chronic pain often stems from years of inactivity, not just a few old injuries. Regular movement, strength, and flexibility are key to staying healthy. (Note: We’re talking musculoskeletal injuries here, not lingering issues like concussions.)
3️⃣ Gradual Progress: Reintroducing movement after an injury with controlled, gradual increases in intensity is essential. This helps rebuild strength and confidence without overwhelming your body or mind.
4️⃣ Injuries Happen: Fatigue, overuse, or even bad luck can cause injuries. Rather than fearing them, focus on building resilience, knowing your limits, and recovering properly.
5️⃣ Perfect Form is Personal: Everyone’s body is unique. What’s perfect form for one person could be uncomfortable or even harmful for another. Adapt exercises to fit your body.
6️⃣ Not Every Exercise is for Everyone: Not everyone can—or should—jump straight into exercises like barbell back squats. Some people just don’t have the mobility or strength for certain movements, and that’s okay.
7️⃣ Consistency is King: You can’t expect great results if you eat and sleep poorly or drink more alcohol than water. Consistent habits in mobility, strength, cardio, sleep, hydration, and nutrition are the foundation of success—whether in rehab or performance training.
Remember, it’s not just about doing things right—it’s about doing what’s right for you. Stay consistent, listen to your body, and you’ll see the results.
